About Anna Vajda

Anna Vajda is a young Canadian/Hungarian artist based in BC. She comes from a family of artists; her mother is a mural/landscape artist, and her father is also a painter and sculptor. Anna grew up surrounded by art and got extensive art training from her early childhood through adolescence. Art has always been a natural part of her everyday life.

Animals and people are a constant inspiration for Anna’s artwork. Ever since childhood, she has had a special affection for horses. She started riding at the age of six and grew up around horses and other animals for much of her life. “My first ever ‘real’ job was being a stablehand at a local equestrian facility,” says Anna, “I didn’t mind the dirty work as long as I got to be around those beautiful creatures. Animals are easy to get along with. All you have to do is bring them food and they are happy to see you.” Anna’s love for horses and her connection to animals is evident through the work she does.

Anna also trained in classical ballet for 13 years, which has led her to pursue a bachelor's Degree in Health and Exercise Sciences at the University of British Columbia. "The human body (anatomy) and the various ways in which people can express their emotions through facial expressions and body language are so fascinating to me," says Anna. You will often see portraits and people simply being people in Anna's figurative work. "I love the challenge of trying to evoke a certain emotion from a figurative piece, and getting that emotion from the figure to translate onto the canvas," she says.

Anna’s work is often described as modern-classic, realistic and natural. Her uses of contrast, light, movement and harmonious colours are always seen in her works. Her subtle and effective use of negative space, contrasting raw edges and precisely crafted brush strokes make the focus of her artwork clear and elegant.
